This was my first church marketing type conference. I have a Marketing Degree and own a Direct Marketing company but you sure can learn a lot simply by listening to other points of view. The main thing I learned is even though other people may not “do church” the way you do they are just as passionate as you are about reaching people for Jesus. They simply use all of the cultural relevant videos and tools to reach people. As a matter of fact Craig Groeschel who pastors Lifechurch.tv, one of the most technically innovative churches in America, said that recently he decided to do a series where he didn’t use any technology at any time during the series. He wanted to teach everyone a lesson. You can’t look at the things they do and say “hey that is why they are growing”. All of those things are simply hooks. He explains that it is God who does the real work and it is God who gives the increase. I’ll close with one last comment from Craig that stuck with me. He said don’t lose Biblical truth trying too hard to be culturally relevant. That is powerful. We must always keep that in perspective.
